Movie review: Private Tropical 22 "Tropical Twins" (2006) (Slata Fide, Melany Jolin, Priva Ley)
The spanish journalist Miguel Ángel Bastenier signed the 3D theory a few years ago. This theory postulated that the 3D that a good story must have are the following: drama, fun and money (in spanish Drama, Diversión y Dinero). In Tropical Twins there is enough of each of them, so we are going to immerse ourselves in this film directed by Max Bellocchio because the subject promises.

In the opening credits we detect that the genre in which this feature film falls is that of photography, because a photographer is the main protagonist of the snapshots, which run from side to side across the screen as if it were the lead of a 80's sitcom. The opening ends with a fade of the title on a yacht in the middle of the Indian Ocean to a kaleidoscopic jungle image.
From the beginning it is very clear what the guiding threads of this manual blockbuster will be.

Ventura tastes a Cuban rum cocktail with a parrot as his only company and his mobile phone vibrates. He calls Mr. Frankie and endorses him with a job for the next morning. He is sending two models to you for a photo shoot. Oreste Fiengo's music accompanies the entire scene well and ends with a tagline at sunset, just before the change of shot. Masterly.
That same night, Ventura travels to Europe by direct flight to entrust the job of Mr. Frankie to his monozygotic twin brother, who is already waiting for him with a most tropical outfit because he somehow senses what is going to happen. Ventura is having dinner tonight with Mr. Randall near Paris, a television producer who produces the reality show Night & Day. Brilliant Hispanic performer Max Cortés doesn't have a twin in the real world, but here Bellocchio used an innovative technique to insert two separate shots into the same image (split screen). In the jargon of the genre this is known as "twinning". This was already used at the dawn of celluloid in films such as L´homme orchestre (1900) or Suspense (1913).
Max Cortes, in a very remarkable performance display, gets into the role of the two twins. Both have very different personalities, in clear opposition, but the Catalan more than fulfills his mission by embroidering both roles without hesitation.

Now Silver will travel to the Antilles to carry out the photo shoot first thing in the morning, replacing his brother Ventura, who will attend the meeting with the top staff of French television to try to reach a pre-contractual scenario. Silver has to settle for supplanting his twin, while Ventura trades big for the two. A certain envy awakens in Silver's inquiring mind.

In the lounge of the chateau we are already sitting after the meal, with the ristretto coffee, while Randall looks through Ventura's portfolio and timid compliments are heard and it looks good. Mr. Randall also gives Ventura his ears before excusing himself, urging him to close the deal with his Russian wife. She doesn't speak any English, but luckily there is a simultaneous translator at the meeting. The question that arises is... what language will the Randalls then speak to each other? In all probability, French.

Now is when the drama floods us like the tourist who stops just in front of the Trevi Fountain... Miss Randall, through her translator, reveals her letters. She owns 50% of the production company's shares and wants to divorce her husband... In order to have a favorable judgment, she needs compromising photos and for this she wants to hire the services of Ventura, who will set her hooks and secretly take pictures of her husband. They offer him, in addition to a television job, an additional 5,000 euros as a bonus.

The Russian Miss Randall retires to her rooms and then the translator asks for one of his models to alleviate the loneliness she suffers in the Randall mansion. He goes further and invites him to use his boat in Reunion.
We travel back to the Antilles and from there, Ventura calls Mr Frankie to remind him of the next day's appointment. The translator and Mr Randall have also traveled to Réunion. One to see Ventura's work live, and the other to make use of his yacht... and that's because the chutzpah don't miss a single opportunity.

What Randall doesn't expect is a set-up with a model, and that is precisely what Ventura organizes a few days later. The following week, Ventura returns to Paris because it is not convenient for two twin photographers to spend a long time working separately on the same island. They may fool some all the time, or all of them for a short time, but not all of them all the time.

From there, he now organizes a date for Mr. Frankie and his wife, with a Thai model whom Silver is taking some innocent photos of in the jungle. The hook for the Thai, and for which she accepts that job, is once again to get a job for television. The Harvey Weinstein scandals brought to light this type of abuse and the exchange of goods and services for contracts in the cinema; Somehow Bellocchio began to uncover this type of pernicious relationship.

Silver tells him that he will fly there in half an hour, and then Ventura takes the opportunity to change the humble Mini Cooper MK VI for another more exclusive vehicle, in order to entertain Mr. Frankie himself and his queer wife. Both Randall and Mr. Frankie are his two routes into television production, and he wants to keep all options open in case one of them goes awry.

Mr Frankie's wife, who looks like the spanish actor Edu Soto is picked up by a Rolls Royce Sylver Spirit III in blue navy that surprise to everyone. Inside is the Thai woman, wearing the same clothes as in the session because she got off the private jet just as she got on. What is evident is that candidates to work in the television sector cannot be afraid of flying. Ventura, for his part, seems surprised that Mr. Frankie is not present and decides to join the party. Mr. Frankie's wife says goodbye to the chauffeur James who has brought his own from Reunion just outside Miss Randall's mansion and they go inside to continue the festival. This connection is not clear to us at the moment, but other secrets will soon be revealed.

Meanwhile, Randall continues with his crazy life in Reunion, falling into all the traps that Ventura has set for him, but this time it is Silver who takes the photos camouflaged among the banana trees
The devils drag him to the dark side
The incriminating photos reach Ventura by mail, and he finally shows them to Miss Randall, accompanied by another producer of Hispanic origin, Oliver. In some Frenchified gardens they pay him 5,000 euros and confusion arises that gives us the definitive clue. They confuse him with Silver. Far from making him jumpy, Ventura remains confident and calm, however, the Randalls had no contact with Silver at any point in the film.

In the next scene, Silver has returned to the old continent and dressed in pajamas worthy of Zed in Pulp fiction, receives a visit from his brother Ventura. Ventura tells him that the Randalls have agreed to sign him and that he is the first person to know the news. Silver has plans of his own and is blinded by his ambition.

Two main factors have influenced, on the one hand, Miss Randall found out that Ventura was playing both sides when he met Mr. Frankie's wife in his mansion. That did not please the Soviet blonde, who carries loyalty by flag in all areas of her life, betting on it to defend her interests in the separation dispute. But the great responsible is the love that arose on the island of Reunion between El Translator, also queer, and Silver.

Miss Randall, Silver and The Translator have come out very well after this drama story, but Mr.Randall, Ventura and Angelica (without any chance of reaching television despite having been with both Mr.Frankie and Mr. Randall) Another actress who falls by the wayside...
