Movie review: Private Tropical 5 "Paradise Island" (2003) (Nikki Nun, Janet Neron, Angela Mistral, Delfynn Collage)

The first film of the Private Tropical saga on Reunion Island starts aboard a yacht, not far from the coast. Captain Malcomini, his brother Francesco and another sailor take care of a rich Swedish blonde. Just arrived from Stockholm, she has rented a ship trip for herself and sunbathes, relaxed.

The Captain brings her a glass full of sparkling French champagne in a demonstration of servility unlike for his rank, and informs her that the time has ended, according to the budget. She wants to stay a little longer and claims that money is not a problem although, since she does not have enough cash, she offers to pay them by barter. The Captain and the sailor leave their tasks and focus on the voluptuous Nordic that looklikes to Camerón Diaz. Francesco, at the helm, figures out the scene and approaches to sniff, rubbing his hands. But to his dismay, his brother and Captain leaves him out of the party and sends him to scrub the cellars. It only remains for him to observe from a distance. So far, so close.

Back on the island, they rest in the pool of the modest condominium they live in, before sunset. The miserly Captain, the helmsman Francesco and the local sailor tell Gregory what has happened today, still incredulous. That Swedish woman was pure fire.
 
Analyzing the move

It is convenient here to make a subsection, and briefly summarize the history of this quartet. Captain Malcomini and his brother Francesco arrived on the island in the spring of 2002. The Captain had some money saved and an intense entrepreneurial skills, so he convinced his brother to start a nautical tourism company. They hired a local sailor in early May, and eventually his European friend Gregory decided to fly to Reunion in the early summer to work on the project as well. In mid-August, in the height of the high season, they enjoy a large amount of customers and sumptuous women.
Without going any further, Gregory himself, who has been enjoying vacation today, has been left with a Slovak brunette on the beach, and leaves the three in the middle of a discussion about poor Francesco and his status as a minority stakeholder in a society that seems more created for fuck, that to bill. The brunette and her holes are undoubtedly much more interesting than a testosterone-laden fight.

The following Sunday, Gregory, Francesco and the local sailor have a drink on a terrace, in front of the Alpha Fishing School, when a candid man around forty years old appears accompanied by a beautiful blonde, looking for sailors to take his wife to Rock Beach. The local sailor is the lucky one this time. "Yes, tomorrow will be fine, yes," he answers smily. The unfortunate Francesco, who is reminded by Gregory that his brother has ordered him to clean the ship, misses a new chance.

Francesco is so unhappy, tired of waiting for his moment. He decides to go to the Saint Paul´s market at seaside, to relax himself. There, his mediocre life will take an unexpected turn.

Alone; without women, without money...

A power stone that changes everything


At the Saint Paul market, a tacky man with a Hawaiian shirt and indecipherable intentions approaches him; but he whispers that he knows the problems he has: with his brother, with his work and with women. Then, he gives him a power stone, an amulet with which he can dominate the will of the people. At first, Francesco thinks it is a scam, but that man is still determined to reveal the secret before "going on a long journey."

Don't accept candy from strangers ...

You can only use the stone once, he warns you; "If you want to use it on more occasions, you should visit the house on the hill, the only European house on the island, where a man who everyone calls "The Devil" lives." Then the tacky Hawaiian shirt weared disappears without a trace, leaving Francesco stumped.

Francesco does not believe a half word, although he admits that the trick to volatilize has been quite professional. With nothing to lose, he decides to try his luck with the first European girl to be found on the docks, not far from there. She, despite the initial reluctance, as soon as she contemplates the stone becomes sweet as honey.

The next day, the sailor converted into a Captain, rents a boat in La Compagnie des Alizes with all the savings he has left, and takes the European girl into the sea, where both allow themselves to be carried away by vice and fornication.

That rock is infallible! So as soon as they dock at the port, Francesco visits the mysterious house on the hill, to speak to "The Devil" and ask for more discount opportunities.

Indeed, the house has European architecture, and even the vegetation resembles that of París suburbs more than that of a tropical island. Inside, "The Devil" is already waiting for him. He is a black man with a blond beard, a typical face for a 80s Star Trek villain. Here starts a terrifying scene that gives meaning to this horros movie. He speaks without opening his mouth. And he warns him that "he can only use the amulet five times, before hiding it so that no one will ever find it."

Before saying goodbye, "The Devil" offers to his new guest a gomory with golden hair, who has an extra long tongue (watch the trailer). Life begins to smile at the friendly Francesco, no doubt. Back in Saint Gilles, he summons his colleagues to dinner at Ben's restaurant, because he has something important to tell them. One of them receives the news having breakfast in the sun, still oblivious to the mysteries of the island and the power that is concentrated there. The director wanted to emphasize here that sometimes he lives very well in ignorance, enjoying a cake and freshly squeezed juice.

The new Captain introduces himself in society

After finishing with the food, he tells them that he already owns a huge sailboat and shows them the property contract. Faced with the palpable skepticism of his brother, he decides to invite Gregory and the local sailor to a private party on the high seas, avoiding invite the former captain. Of course, he asks his two guests to come accompanied by several blondes, many of them, because all expenses paid.

I´m not a sailor, i´m the captain, i´m the captain!

Gregory and the local sailor make some calls and go with the rich Swedish, the Czech from the Rock Beach and three other young girls. Time to put the bread in the oven.

In the evening, in an island restaurant, the ambitious Francesco has dinner with the director of one of the banks of Reunion. She is very helpful and gives him some credit cards, checks and activates the transfer for 1 million US dollars.

Days later, Francesco enjoys his new mansion with a formidable private pool and his new millionaire life. Gregory and the local sailor, still without a known name, listen under the rays of the sun to reveal their secret. The story is amazing, but so is its meteoric growth, so they have nothing to object to. Francesco, who is not spiteful, announces to them that he will go up first to his brother to the house on the hill, and that later it will be their turn. Perhaps, in reality what moves him is the fear that everything will collapse around him and that was only happening in his mind, being the only fool involved in that fantasy.

The purgatory 


The visit to the house on the hill is not as expected and is that "The Devil" is like those toxic people who are never very clear how they will react. As soon as he gives you an amazing blonde, as he replies with an amazing abruptness. In fact, in this second meeting, he expels Francesco without regard for being presumptuous and going up there with his little brother. In contrast, The Devil presents his brother with another high quality gomory, which he mercilessly fornicates in an underground pool, which no doubt symbolizes Dante Alighieri's purgatory.

Of course, he choosed wrong...

Meanwhile, in the real world, Francesco and the sailor talks about their life in the new mansion.

Gregory decides to call one of the girls from the party on the boat and takes her to a jungle paradise, Le Bassin des Cormorans; a natural swimming pool with a waterfall in which the couple does everything except bathing.

The film is coming to an end and the story is already spent, let's be honest. That same night, Francesco reflects in solitude in his brand-new mansion, analyzes in retrospect what that powerful amulet has given him: a beautiful woman, a boat, a million dollars and, since she is not dumb and wants to invest in his future, he has also proclaimed himself administrator of the largest tourist agency on the island and has owned an unlimited credit card.

"Think of everything we´ve accomplished"

Francesco concludes that "he has it all" and calls the Devil himself naive for imposing those rules that are so simple to comply with: "use it only five times and hide the amulet forever".
As he prepares to go to the beach to throw the stone far away, a thief with his head buried in a pantyhose docks him on the garden of his chalet. As he refuses to deliver the stone, he stabs him several times before throwing his inert body into the pool.

Now, the lost soul that floats in limbo before undertaking a long journey is Francesco himself. She soon finds Fernando, a drunkard with no future and no incoms, who has no trouble to scam with the amulet. Then Francesco volatilizes. Moral of a fable: his pride was his downfall.

  Sorprende la cantidad de personas que cruzan el Atlántico para pasarse una semana entera recostados sobre una tumbona de ratán, sin salir del resort del lujo que han escogido en un catálogo promocional y con el único afán de descansar y de buscar una tranquilidad digna de la piscina de Fuentecerrada, Teruel. Aquí en Europa disponemos también de unas playas alucinantes, tanto en España (véase Formentera o la Costa Brava) como en otros países como Portugal, Grecia, Croacia o en islas como Córcega y Cerdeña... ¿Quién en su sano juicio se embute en un asiento de clase turista para viajar a República Dominicana y disfrutar de unas calas similares? ¿De verdad las personas toman un vuelo de 9 horas o incluso pasajes con escala, para únicamente tomar el sol?... La respuesta es que sí. La banalidad, amigo lector, ha conquistado a la sociedad actual.

El drama de los ERE sobrevuela esta película de principio a fin, narrando las últimas vacaciones de unas compañeras de profesión, que se han visto afectadas por un reajuste de personal en la aerolínea para la que trabajaban. La filosofía del "carpe diem" ha calado hondo en sus corazones y deciden ponerla en práctica en la isla caribeña. Un planteamiento magnífico para este clásico de cine de tarde.

The engaged couple strolls through a manicured French garden in Barre Trigano Castle, accompanied by a third woman. - "It is my parents' house" says the future wife. This luxurious mansion has little of a house and a lot of a palace. Everything is going great, even the relationship with the sister-in-law seems to be quite cordial and the atmosphere is calm.

Un acusado tono sepia de la secuencia de apertura nos indica que estamos presenciando un evento del pasado. Es un flashback aderezado con una música digna de Ocean´s Eleven que acontece en un acogedor chalet de estilo antillano situado en Guadeloupe. Esa tonalidad es acertada hasta tal punto, que incluso la relacionamos de forma inconsciente con el calor húmedo de determinadas latitudes tropicales. Un hombre maduro con ínfulas, sombrero Panamá y puro Davidoff aguarda sentado en una mullida hamaca, al lado de una piscina calmada como plato de sopa abandonada a medio comer. Algo horrible está a punto de ocurrir...

La película comienza con una  visión panorámica de Nápoles  al final de la tarde, sobre la Avenida Antonio Gramsci, a lo largo de la playa Mappatella, con el Castell d´l Ovo al fondo. En una casa palaciega napolitana, decorada con aire neoclásico, una pareja se despide. El pobre Alessandro se marcha a un viaje de trabajo, al sombrío y desolador Kiev, quién sabe si a revisar el sarcófago de la central de Chernobil. No parece ser un viaje atractivo.
