Tropical luscious dreams

It is surprising the number of people who cross the Atlantic to spend an entire week lying on a rattan lounger, without leaving the luxury resort that they have chosen in a promotional catalog and with the sole desire to rest and enjoy the tranquility of the Fuentecerrada’s pool. Here in Europe we also have some amazing beaches, both in England (see Sandbanks for example) and in other countries such as Spain, Portugal, Greece, Croatia or on islands such as Corsica and Sardinia... Who in their right mind would bury themselves in A tourist class seat to travel to the Dominican Republic and enjoy similar coves? Do people really take a 9-hour flight or even flights with a stopover, just to sunbathe?... The answer is yes. Banality, dear reader, has conquered today's society.

Sorprende la cantidad de personas que cruzan el Atlántico para pasarse una semana entera recostados sobre una tumbona de ratán, sin salir del resort del lujo que han escogido en un catálogo promocional y con el único afán de descansar y de buscar una tranquilidad digna de la piscina de Fuentecerrada, Teruel. Aquí en Europa disponemos también de unas playas alucinantes, tanto en España (véase Formentera o la Costa Brava) como en otros países como Portugal, Grecia, Croacia o en islas como Córcega y Cerdeña... ¿Quién en su sano juicio se embute en un asiento de clase turista para viajar a República Dominicana y disfrutar de unas calas similares? ¿De verdad las personas toman un vuelo de 9 horas o incluso pasajes con escala, para únicamente tomar el sol?... La respuesta es que sí. La banalidad, amigo lector, ha conquistado a la sociedad actual.

The death rattles of an old Englishman lying on his deathbed have brought us here. A sharp sepia tone in the opening sequence indicates that we are witnessing an event from the past. It is a flashback seasoned with music worthy of Ocean's Eleven that takes place in a cozy Antillean-style chalet located in Guadeloupe. This tonality is accurate to such an extent that we even unconsciously relate it to the humid heat of certain tropical latitudes. An airy middle-aged man, wearing a Panama hat and a Davidoff cigar, sits in a soft hammock next to a pool as calm as a plate of cold soup. Something horrible is about to happen...

Un acusado tono sepia de la secuencia de apertura nos indica que estamos presenciando un evento del pasado. Es un flashback aderezado con una música digna de Ocean´s Eleven que acontece en un acogedor chalet de estilo antillano situado en Guadeloupe. Esa tonalidad es acertada hasta tal punto, que incluso la relacionamos de forma inconsciente con el calor húmedo de determinadas latitudes tropicales. Un hombre maduro con ínfulas, sombrero Panamá y puro Davidoff aguarda sentado en una mullida hamaca, al lado de una piscina calmada como plato de sopa abandonada a medio comer. Algo horrible está a punto de ocurrir...

La filosofía del "carpe diem" ha calado hondo en sus corazones y deciden ponerla en práctica en la isla caribeña. Un planteamiento magnífico para este clásico de cine de tarde.

Some trumpeting worthy of an evening game show on general TV introduced this thriller filmed entirely on African soil. The Madagascar coast and its volcanic geology predispose the viewer, who is going to witness the rise and end of a screenwriter who has fallen from grace because of his two downfalls: drink and his promiscuous wife.

Unos trompeteos dignos de un concurso vespertino de TV generalista introducen este thriller filmado íntegramente en territorio africano. La costa de Madagascar y su geología volcánica predisponen al espectador, que va a presenciar el auge y final de un guionista caído en desgracia por culpa de sus dos perdiciones: la bebida y su promiscua esposa.

En este modesto rincón de internet, en donde escribo reseñas fool story context sobre películas de la saga tropical, entrevistamos esta noche al director de todas las películas de la saga Tropical, que fueron filmadas 2002-2009: el italiano Max Bellocchio. The opening credits, in black and white and with a soundtrack that invites pessimism, announce that we are going to witness a tragic piece with a bad ending. What starts badly ends badly, as the popular saying goes. The close-up takes us to the very Caribbean, to a beach in the north of the Dominican Republic, where a lonely young man named Steve meditates on his current situation. 

Los créditos iniciales, en blanco y negro y con una banda sonora que invita al pesimismo, nos anuncian que vamos a presenciar una pieza trágica y con un mal final. Lo que mal empieza, mal acaba, como dice el refrán popular. El primer plano nos lleva hasta el mismísimo Caribe, a una playa del norte de República Dominica, en donde un solitario joven llamado Steve medita acerca de su actual situación.

  The honeymoon is an incomparable, special journey; for example, for many people it is the most extraordinary adventure of their lives. The most common destinations are usually enclaves of sun and sand, and this factor served as inspiration for Max Bellocchio when shooting one of his most emotionally charged romance films in his entire career. We are facing the advent of a new cinematographic paradigm in the work of the Italian filmmaker.

  La luna de miel es un periplo incomparable, especial; verbi gracia , para muchas personas se trata de la aventura más extraordinaria de su vida. Los destinos más habituales suelen ser enclaves de sol y playa, y este factor sirvió de inspiración a Max Bellocchio a la hora de rodar uno de sus filmes de romance con mayor carga emocional de toda su filmografía. Estamos ante el advenimiento de un nuevo paradigma cinematográfico en la obra del cineasta italiano.
